Maize farmers to dig deep in their pockets for fertilizer
Agriculture cabinet secretary mwangi kiunjuri on monday 10th february claimed that there is no subsidized fertilizers being imported this year. Kiunjuri speaking before the national assembly agricultural committee, accused the finance ministry led by cabinet secretary Henry Rotich for failing to release funds for the importation of subsidized fertilizers. Maize farmers who are preparing their land for the planting season will be forced to dig deep into their pockets to purchase commercial fertilizers which costs higher.
The big concern now remains in the mind of maize farmers ifthere will be enough fertilizer for planting this season. Most farmers are likely to plant their produce without fertilizers which will lead to lower yields at the end of the year, as a bag of DAP fertilizer now going atksh3,200 or slightly higher. This indicates the agricultural sector has failed despite being among the presidents big 4 agenda of food security.Last year’s maize have now started being bought by the national cereals and produce board and have not yet released fertilizer to the farmers.
