The former Kenya Sevens playmaker said the Oilers must make a lot of improvements if they are to be competitive against KCB and Kabras in the Kenya Cup after their Impala Floodlit went up in flames.
“It is a wake-up call for us but I’m happy the defeat has come now. We now have three more weeks of pre-season and I believe we can rectify our mistakes and be stronger when the season starts,” added Weru.
Weru said their focus is on defence, kicking and counterattacking in the next couple of weeks as they seek to record improvements.
“From the game against KCB we saw our Defence patterns, kicking game and counterattack were not good so we are going back to the drawing board to improve those facets of play “ he added
The Nakuru-based outfit trailed 24-0 at the interval and despite .the second-half comeback, where they scored 21 points, they still lost the encounter.
“The slow start did not help especially against a quality team like KCB. You must match them not only on the pitch but on the scoreboard,” he said.
Weru’s charges will aim to finish third when they face Blak Blad in the bronze medal match on Saturday.
The Kenya Cup semifinalists have added former Kisumu RFC and South Pirates tactician Lawrence Buyachi to their technical bench as an assistant forwards coach.
“He is an asset to the side, a good student of the game and very experienced. He will be of good value to the side as we start the Kenya Cup season,” added Weru. Buyachi won the Kenya Cup with Nakuru in 2012 and 2013.
Elsewhere, the Kenya rugby fraternity is mourning following the death of former international and Kenya Simbas’ assistant coach Edward Kinyany on Tuesday.
Kinyany won the Kenya Cup as a player in 1995, 1996, 1999 and 2003. He also guided the Ngong Road outfit as a coach to win three Kenya Cup titles (2010-2012).
