The Ministry of Education and the Nairobi City County Government have joined forces to implement a school feeding program called “Dishi Na County.” This program aims to provide meals to 250,000 children in public primary schools and Early Childhood Development centers during regular school days. The funding for the program will be shared equally between the two governments over the next three years.

To facilitate the program, mega kitchens have been established in ten sub-counties: Dagoretti North, Embakasi Central, Embakasi South, Kasarani, Kibra, Makadara, Starehe, Roysambu, Ruaraka, and Westlands. These kitchens will be responsible for preparing the meals that will be distributed to the children.

The Intergovernmental Partnership Agreement (IPA) that was signed between the National and Nairobi City County Governments outlines the collaboration for the school feeding program. It emphasizes that this partnership does not involve a transfer of functions or power from the National Government to the county government. Instead, both levels of government aim to improve the teaching and learning experience in public primary schools in Nairobi, starting with the provision of nutritious school meals to enhance the health and nutrition status of the students.

Governor Johnson Sakaja has highlighted the positive impact of the program since its launch. School enrollment has increased, and children can now focus on their studies without facing hunger issues. As a result, the academic performance of the children has improved.

This initiative demonstrates a commitment to providing better education and nutrition for young learners in Nairobi City County, fostering an environment that allows children to thrive academically and lead healthier lives.
