Tensions have emerged within the Kenya Kwanza–ODM political alliance over who should become President William Ruto’s running mate if he seeks a second term in the 2027 General Election.
During a private meeting in Naivasha on Monday, ODM leaders reportedly pushed for the Deputy President position as part of a proposed power-sharing arrangement. Kisii Governor and ODM deputy party leader Simba Arati argued that the position should go to ODM, since Ruto is expected to seek re-election under UDA.
The proposal reportedly unsettled some Mt Kenya leaders, particularly because Deputy President Kithure Kindiki was present at the meeting. However, Khwisero MP Christopher Aseka defended ODM’s position, saying the party should be treated as an equal partner in the coalition.
ODM National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed confirmed that Arati raised the issue but denied that there was a major disagreement. Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir similarly said the matter had not been discussed in detail and would be addressed as the coalition negotiations progress.
President Ruto later asked Prof. Kindiki to give a summary of the meeting, praising him for his ability to bring together issues including the economy, education, devolution, society and diplomacy. His prominent role was viewed by some leaders as a sign that Ruto continues to have confidence in Kindiki.
ODM has increasingly signalled its interest in the Deputy President position, with former Kakamega Governor and Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya among those being mentioned as a possible candidate. Other names reportedly under consideration include Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, ODM leader Oburu Oginga, Hassan Joho, Moses Wetang’ula and Musalia Mudavadi.
However, opinion polling cited in the report continues to place Kindiki ahead of other potential running mates.
A 10-member committee has been given one month to prepare a joint 2027 election strategy, including a shared manifesto and coalition agreement. Although the two sides have reportedly agreed that Ruto will be the presidential candidate, the choice of running mate remains unresolved.
