Former President Uhuru Kenyatta And President William Ruto.

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has defended retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, saying he has every democratic right to comment on national issues despite leaving office.

Speaking during the funeral service of Full Gospel Church General Overseer Bishop David Macharia’s wife, Reverend Catherine Macharia, in Nakuru County on Tuesday, Gachagua accused some Kenya Kwanza leaders of fueling political tension through reckless tribal remarks targeting certain communities.

He defended Kenyatta, who has recently faced criticism from Kenya Kwanza allies after faulting the government for engaging in blame games instead of addressing challenges affecting Kenyans.

“Wachana na Uhuru Kenyatta. Alipeana serikali kwa amani. Ni Uhuru anafanya serikali isifanye kazi? Uhuru ndio anafanya SHA isifanye? Uhuru ndiye aliuwa Gen Zs?” Gachagua posed.

The former Deputy President urged President William Ruto to focus on solving the country’s problems instead of shifting blame to his predecessor.

“Don’t blame Uhuru Kenyatta for your failures. Leave Uhuru Kenyatta to be. He is retired but not tired,” said Gachagua.

Gachagua also warned politicians against inciteful politics and ethnic profiling, saying such remarks could push the country toward instability similar to the 2007 post-election violence.

“We don’t want what happened in 2007 to repeat. We don’t want the drums of war. Hatutaki jamii yoyote itishwe. This is your home and you have no other home. Mtu asiuziwe uoga. Waache kuprofile a community,” he said.

DCP Leader On A Past Event

The DCP leader further dismissed claims of a possible rigging scheme ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“Mtaiba kura tukiwa wapi? Hii si Uganda. Hii si Tanzania. Don’t threaten people. Those are empty debes,” he stated.

At the same time, Gachagua called for swift investigations into the deaths of several clergymen, among them PCEA Reverend Julius Ngari Ndumia and Catholic priest Father John Ndegwa Maina.

“Three weeks ago, Rev. Ndumia of PCEA Church was killed but his killers were set free… If the President is not safe, who is safe?” he posed.

Reverend Catherine Macharia is set to be buried on Wednesday at her Sugonoi home in Nakuru County.

Meanwhile, DCP candidate Sammy Kamau Waweru officially presented his nomination papers to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission ahead of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election scheduled for mid-July, setting the stage for a fierce contest against the ruling United Democratic Alliance party.
