Sifuna Open to Working with Gachagua Despite Backing His Impeachment

The Nairobi Senator says the opposition’s mission to remove President William Ruto from office is more important than past political differences.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has said he is willing to work with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua despite having voted in favour of his impeachment, saying the opposition’s common objective of removing President William Ruto from office takes precedence over their past political disagreements.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Sifuna said the Linda Mwananchi movement is prepared to collaborate with any political leader committed to defending the Constitution, upholding the rule of law and ensuring President Ruto serves only one term.

“We will work with everyone who believes in these things, the Constitution and the rule of law. We will work with anyone who believes that Ruto does not deserve an extra day in office and, for as long as that’s our cause, we will work together,” Sifuna said.

The former Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General maintained that his decision to support Gachagua’s impeachment was justified, citing what he described as the former Deputy President’s interference in the affairs of Nairobi City County.

“He Already Paid for His Mistakes”

Sifuna insisted that Gachagua had already faced the constitutional consequences of his actions through impeachment and argued that there was no reason to continue pursuing the matter.

“Nothing has changed. First of all, as a lawyer, I’ll tell you there’s a rule against double jeopardy. He paid for his mistakes, he was impeached. What else do you want me to do, beat him?” he posed.

The senator added that although he voted to impeach Gachagua over specific allegations, the former Deputy President is now among those calling for President Ruto’s removal from office.

“I already voted to impeach him and it was for specific crimes, but he’s the one now saying Ruto is an existential threat to this country and that whatever it takes, he can do to remove him,” Sifuna stated.

According to the Nairobi lawmaker, Gachagua carries a unique responsibility in efforts to unseat President Ruto because he played a central role in helping him ascend to power.

“He feels largely responsible for Ruto being in power and therefore he has a greater responsibility in removing him than anyone else, and that is something I agree with because, at the end of the day, we have to kick out Ruto,” he added.

 

 

Dismisses Bribery Claims

Sifuna also rejected claims that Members of Parliament were bribed to support Gachagua’s impeachment, insisting that his vote was based solely on principle and his long-held public position regarding the former Deputy President’s conduct.

“I did not need any inducement when it came to Gachagua’s impeachment because I had publicly taken positions against some of his conduct and pronouncements, like his interference in the running and management of Nairobi City County,” he said.

His remarks come days after National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed alleged that some lawmakers received bribes to support Gachagua’s impeachment.

Speaking during an ODM meeting in Kakamega on July 26, Junet claimed money exchanged hands during the impeachment process, remarks that have since sparked renewed political debate.

Growing Opposition Cooperation

Sifuna’s latest comments signal a growing willingness among opposition leaders to put aside past political differences in pursuit of a common agenda ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The remarks also underscore the evolving political realignments taking shape as various opposition figures seek to build a united front against President William Ruto’s administration.
